If you are not a breakfast person, you will become one in Israel. Not only do Israelis not skip this meal, but they go all out. I’m talking all types of fresh bread, herb-heavy salads, cheese-stuffed bourekas, and dips galore—from creamy labneh to red pepper hummus. And this is just the savory! For sweets, there’s chocolate babka and rose-inflected malabi among other gut-busting treats.
Hotels generally offer a grand buffet, but they also usually serve eggs a la carte like shakshuka (of varying colors) and Mideast versions of eggs benny. But if you’ve chosen to stay in an Airbnb, do not worry: Plenty of restaurants and cafés do it up right—and hotels welcome non-guests, too.
Here, in no particular order, are the four best breakfasts I ate during my 12 days in Israel—both at hotels and outside them. Oh, and if you haven’t yet drizzled honey on your tahini and used it as a dip for challah, you're doing it wrong. :)
