File this under things you didn’t necessarily ask for, but when I LOVE something, I want to shout about it from the rooftops—be it a podcast, a beauty product, or, in this week’s case, an app for DIY workouts. Welcome to “J’adore” a smidgen of declarations from moi about something I adore. (Like, for example, the fact that “adore” and “adore” mean the same thing in English and French. But no need to devote more than a sentence to that!)
I have the pandemic to thank for my developing an at-home yoga practice. In the Before Times, I rarely unfolded my mat chez moi to practice on my own. I’d always get distracted; finding a dust ball in a down-dog or answering a text mid-meditation. Plus, I preferred to practice in a community where the teacher guided us in postures timed to a thoughtful playlist.
Then, as you know, everything changed. Still, I wasn’t willing to sacrifice my practice, which by that point I’d nourished over 20 years in studios around the world from Long Island and London to Ljubljana and Buenos Aires. I had no choice but to find a solution.
For a long while, I joined live streams with teachers I knew and loved on Instagram or Zoom. Then, I got into an app appropriately called Downdog. While it has an unfortunate logo, it still served its purpose for $9.99 a month despite its robotic, computer-generated voice instruction.
I’m not sure how I eventually landed on Glo (Suzanne? Rebecca?), but it’s hands-down my favorite platform for at-home classes.
While I have returned to occasionally practicing in a studio (Sputnik in Paris with Benoit, or Luna + Soul in Long Island with Bec), I still mostly do 30-45 minute sessions at home, wherever that may be—Paris, Long Island, or, most recently, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
